"In the spring of 2007 I was able to visit the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem on three separate occasions. On one of these visits I was able to actually have 15 minutes alone in the tomb. It was incredibly inspiring for me to be there and try to visualize how these sacred events occurred that first Easter morning over 2000 years ago. The surroundings of the tomb have changed, but with a little careful observation and research I felt I was able to build an image in my mind that was true to the landscape and feeling of the time. The direction of the morning light as it would have been and the flora and vegetation of this sacred “garden” I believe is accurate. But aside from the landscape, what moves my emotion is when I think of the Savior approaching Mary as she weeps for Him. It says in St. John 20 verse 15, “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seeketh thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.” Putting aside the history, the most important part of this painting for me is the deep genuine feelings between the Savior and Mary. As he sees her weeping, the incredible love He feels for her is to such an extent that He holds his hand over His heart as if it would burst for love. I think the Savior has such great love for each of us as we also seek with all our heart to find Him."
