Sadly, the noble profession of being an “Officer of the Law” has become distorted in the minds of many of us. We regard the police officer as someone to be wary of because he may be “out to get us.” Because we live in such a vast world where abuse of the law has created some skepticism on the part of both the public and the police, we would do well to be reminded of the high calling a police officer has. Here’s what Jesus said in His famous Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God” Matthew 5:9. Those peacemakers proved true to their calling on September 11th and continue to stand against the torrent of violence and crime that are ever present in today’s world.

ARTIST NOTE:
I tried to think of an historic symbol to paint that would, in my opinion, epitomize the police officer of today. The one I chose is a Crusader holding the flag with the symbol of his mission, the Cross. Nothing said it better and nothing could say it better today. The ultimate Peacemaker was the very Son of God who allowed Himself to be hung on a cross to make peace between two isolated parties. Do you know who those were? God was one and you and I were the other! Christ brought us together and made peace between us. Isn’t that what police officers imitate every time they are confronted with a lawbreaker? Ultimately, I believe it is and once again, our example comes from the greatest who ever lived, Jesus Christ!
